gameloop

Greetings, fellow geeks! There’s plenty for you to do this Geekend, so I hope you have some time in your schedule! There’s a little something going on for everyone from Piscataway, NJ all the way to Kensington.

All weekend

Feel like busting out that gear-heavy gun you made and carrying it around in a holster you built into your corset? Pretty sure you’ll want to check out the Steampunk World’s Fair in Piscataway, NJ. It’s going on from Friday to Sunday, and tauts itself as “The World’s Largest Steampunk Event.” Check out their website for more information on ticket prices, performances, and directions.

The ExCITe Center is host to Music Hack Day from Saturday at 10AM until Sunday at 5PM. “Music Hack Day is an international event celebrated in 12 different cities with over 2,000 participants including artists, programmers and designers,” according to some site called Geekadelphia. The event is free, but registering in advance is highly recommended, especially if you plan on participating.

And finally, there’s the Punk Rock Flea Market running Saturday and Sunday from 10AM to 5PM. It’s $3 to get in, and then however much money you spend to fill your apartment with all new clutter to replace what you threw out when you were spring cleaning. (more…)

American Ham: Nick Offerman Coming to the Tower Theater [Plus, Win Tickets!]

Nick Offerman High Res Photo

Parks and Rec fans, get excited. Ron Swanson is coming to Philly!

Ok, not really. But Nick Offerman, the actor who plays Swanson, will be stopping by at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby on his American Ham tour in September.

Offerman advertises the tour as a “veritable smorgasboard of cautionary tales, tunes, and tips.” The show will open with a performance Nancy and Beth – a band starring actresses Stephanie Hunt (of Friday Night Lights) and Offerman’s wife Megan Mullauly (aka Karen in Will & Grace and Ron’s ex-wife Tammy in Parks and Rec).

It’s not going to be your traditional stand-up. (In a Boston Globe interview, Swanson described himself as a “a foul-mouthed, less-educated Garrison Keillor.”) Offerman will also be sharing his “Ten Tips for Prosperity” (like: “engage in romantic love” and “carry a handkerchief”). Oh, and maybe some woodworking tips. Because, fun fact: like his character Ron Swanson, Offerman has a knack for crafting with wood. Actually, it’s more than a knack – Offerman runs his own woodworking business.

Tickets go on sale May 17. For more information, visit LiveNation’s official website.

And thanks to our friends at LiveNation, we’re giving away a pair of PREMIUM SEATS to the show! You’ll get to sit within the first five rows and experience Ron Swanson Nick Offerman in all his glory. To enter, send over your favorite Ron Swanson quote accompanied by an image of the handsome man… you know, like you’d see on Tumblr or Facebook. Like this:

We’ll pick our favorite at the end of the month, and award you a pair of tickets. Feel free to be creative! Drawings and oil paintings are also welcome. You can email your entry to [email protected], or leave it as a link in the comments.

Laser Cats by Doug Larocca

Over four dozen artists have donated their time and creativity to Philadelphia’s largest no-kill shelter: PAWS (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society).

This past weekend, on Friday, May 10th, a show very near and dear to our little, geeky hearts opened in South Philly: ‘Homeward Bound: A Benefit for PAWS’.

The event was curated by Ryann Casey, and hosted by South Philly vegan cafe, Grindcore House. Showing until July 10th, folks have the opportunity to acquire artwork in various mediums from over fifty local artists (you can see a full list on the Facebook page for the exhibit). All proceeds will be donated to PAWS.

If you don’t leave with a piece of art, perhaps you’ll leave with an idea for a new, furry (canine or feline) friend.

Despicable Me 2’s Despicablimp Comes to Philly Tuesday! UPDATED: DELAYED DUE TO WEATHER

Despicable Me 2

In one of the odder forms of movie promotion, Universal Pictures has created a Despicablimp which is currently in the midst of a national tour (6 months, 22,000 miles) in support of Despicable Me 2’s  July 3rd impending release.

The Despicablimp will also be hovering over to various landmarks in the Philadelphia area on Tuesday, May 14th. The blimp can be tracked in real-time via GPS at the Despicablimp Command Center at www.despicablimp.com.

Folks can also tweet sightings of the blimp or post photos to Instagram or Flickr using #despicablimp to see it featured on the site, and participate in weekly prize giveaways.

Visitors to the site can also enter for a chance to win a trip for four to the Hollywood world premiere of Despicable Me 2 and get the chance to ride in the blimp!

EDIT: This just in: “Unfortunately due to weather conditions over the weekend, the Despicablimp’s flight plan to Philadelphia was delayed.”

Geekend Picks: Carnivolution, 8static, Mike Allen @ the Rotunda

jamie

The Geekend was on a short hiatus, but it has now triumphantly returned! And there’s plenty of great stuff going on this weekend. There’s a little something for everyone.

Friday, May 10

There are lots of things happening on Friday that you’ll want to check out! At the Franklin Institute, there’s the Role Models Matter Forum. This amazing project focuses on getting more girls trained for STEM jobs, encouraging ladies to stay true to their geeky ways and not be deterred. It costs $25 and runs from 9AM to 4PM.

Want to spend Friday night laughing? Then you’ll want to head to the Shubin Theatre, for Improv Comedy: The Bat at 7PM and Sketch Comedy: Dog Mountain at 8:30PM. Each show costs $12.

You can also check out the strange and unusual at the Carnivolution Circus Sideshow presented by the Squidling Bros. at 3819 Hamilton Street. The show includes Freaks Fire, Circus Sideshow, Burlesque Aerial Acrobatics, Anchor’s Aweigh Flesh Suspension, and the Art Garden’s Three Dimensional Murals, with Live Music by Bunny Savage and band. This is the ninth year of the show, which starts at 8PM and costs $10.

There’s also Ladyfest Philadelphia: Ladies and Gentlemen… The Fabulous Stains for $9 at the International House at 8PM. This “sarcastic and hilarious look at the early 1980s punk scene” will be introduced by rock critic Sara Sherr.

Still not interested? Well how about the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society hosts Mike Allen at the Rotunda, a free event that begins at 9PM? Or a screening of Prom Night at 9:45 at the Colonial Theatre for $9? You can’t go wrong with a science fiction poet and some great Jamie Lee Curtis horror.

Saturday, May 11

There’s plenty going on Saturday as well. The Eastwick Branch of the Free Library is having their monthly Lego Club at 2PM. Bring your bricks and some imagination! Their address is 2851 Island Ave, and the phone number is 215.685.4170.

There’s also some more comedy at the Shubin Theatre, all for $12 per show. If you missed The Bat on Friday, you can see it Saturday at 7PM or at midnight, depending on your schedule. There’s also Improv Comedy: PHIT House Team Night at 8:30PM or at 10PM.

Love chiptunes? Then you’ll definitely want to be at PhilaMOCA at 7PM for 8static 35. This all-ages show costs $10 (and includes a sticker!) and features the music of A_Rival, Inverse Phase, Watabou, and Philly’s own Dain Saint from Cipher Prime!

Finally, there’s the monthly board game night at Circle of Hope, the Saturday Night Board Game Extravaganza. It starts at 7PM, and they’ll have plenty of board games and snacks. Be sure to bring a snack to share and a game you want to play, as well as some friends!

Sunday, May 12

Sunday is Mother’s Day, which means most of you will be out getting brunch with mom, or taking her somewhere fancy that has trees or flowers or something, I don’t even know. There’s not much going on in the city that day, likely because everyone knows where you’ll be. If you’re free that night, you can head to the Shubin Theatre for another night of comedy. They’ve got Improv Comedy: The Deans at 8:30PM for free. Bring mom along!

That’s it for the Geekend! Got something you want featured in a future edition? Feel free to leave a comment here or tweet at me on Twitter!

The Philly Geek Awards: Returning on Saturday, August 17th, 2013!

We’re psyched to announce the date for this year’s Philadelphia Geek Awards!

Saturday, August 17th, 2013.

You might notice that the ceremony is on a Saturday this year, instead of a Friday night. After chatting about the ceremony last month and reviewing your feedback, we opted to move it to a weekend.

You guys wanted more time to walk around the museum. You didn’t want to rush to the ceremony after work. You didn’t want to miss out on cocktails and nibbles.

So, Saturday it is!

You’ll also notice two big changes on the website.

ONE: Sponsorship opts! We finally put together a proper, cohesive sponsorship one-pager complete with ranked tiers. There’s also standalone sponsorships that have unique details associated with them. You can check out the one-pager on the official website. Help us make the ceremony happen this year!

TWO: Easy nomination forms! Have someone you’d like us to check out? We’ve got an easy form you can fill out on the website. As much as we’re connected to the local geek scene, we still need your help to make sure we don’t miss anyone! So send over your nomination tips!

THREE: This year’s after party will be at NORTH BOWL in Northern Liberties. We’re planning some awesome things for that evening, so stay tuned!

FOUR: Tickets will be available in July… and they’re sure to sell out. Keep those fingers ready!

So mark your calendars, geeks. We’ll see you in August.

RADARR+++ Celebrates Genre Writing at Locust Moon Comics

locust moon sign

Bright, vibrant art has always been a necessary staple of comics and graphic novels. From the stick figures of xkcd to the in-depth shading methods used in Batman, Watchmen, and countless others, the illustrations that accentuate the medium entice readers and creators alike.

However, none of it would be possible without excellent writing.

Whether it’s haunting dialogue or simply video game jokes, the written word is just as–if not more–important to a truly finished work. The staff at Locust Moon Comics in University City appreciates the power of writing and is hosting an event to showcase its power.

On Saturday, May 11 at 7PM, drop by the store’s 40th Street location for RADAR+++, a sci-fi/genre fiction reading. While you are of course welcome to attend and enjoy the fruits of some excellent writers, those with a penchant for the craft are encouraged to actively participate.

If you enjoy fictional writing in the sci-fi, horror, superhero, spy, crime, fantasy, or action genres and have work that you would like to share with an audience, bring it to the event! You will be given ten minutes to present your work to an eager audience of comic book fans as well as fellow writers.

For more details, visit and RSVP to the event’s Facebook page.
