Apple Cookies: The Computer, Not the Fruit

apple-logo-cookies

Zoe Lukas, our favorite cookie maker from Philly’s own Whipped Bakeshop, created these tasty looking Apple logo cookies. They’re “vanilla sugar cookie with almond royal icing. Made with a handmade custom cutter.” Simple and sweet.

You can see the full size image over on her Flickr. I hear these cookies not only look nice, but are very user friendly. Unlike her Window’s Vista cookies, which tend to freeze and lock up in your mouth for no reason at all.

Female Optimus Prime: Sexy Robotic Wallpaper

female-optimus-prime-wallpaper

Hey Tim, check it out. It’s your dream woman.

You can download the full, high resolution wallpaper over on Tugen Wang’s Flickr page. I only wish the website wasn’t printed along the bottom of the wallpaper.

He has a bunch of other interesting desktop wallpapers as well, including this neat looking one of the Ninja Turtles. Be sure to skim through his Flickr to check out the rest of his illustration work. Definitely a talented guy.

Smores Keyboard: Delicious, Leaves Hands Sticky

I’ve been trying to find some more info on this image of a delicious looking keyboard made of Smores, but alas, I keep getting lost in the links on Tumblr. Come on people, source your information! It’s all about the trackbacks!

If anyone has the story on this image, let me know. I’ve got to know who made this!

Thanks to Tony for the link! Next camping trip we go on, I expect you to make me one of these.

Oh Snap, It’s….The 2008 Geekadelphia Holiday Gift Guide!

Is it nearly Christmas Chanukah Kwanzaa the Holidays already?! We’ve been so busy rushing from convention to convention and playing game after game over the past few months that these pesky folks called “loved ones” keep bugging us for attention. Can you believe it?! Luckily, we snapped out of our haze and recognized the urgency for a detailed and comprehensive guide of the best gifts for the geekier “loved ones” in your life. So we’ve teamed up with PhiladelphiaWeekly.com and the fruits of our labor are here for all to see.

The video above documents a trip to Brave New Worlds Comics in Old City where we found out why some of the items you’ll find suggested after the break made it onto our list. Geekadelphia’s Ben Gilbert spoke with BNW’s Brian Johnson and Geekadelphia’s Editor-in-Chief Eric Smith about everything from The Dark Knight’s many “Limited” Editions to why zombies are awesome (as if you didn’t already know). To explore our full gift guide, with personal suggestions from each member of the Geekadelphia crew, hit that bump! (But do not, DO NOT, shake that bear.)

Holy Half-Life! Source Mod ‘Black Mesa’ Seriously Impresses

Are you one of the few who didn’t play the original Half-Life way back in 1998 (that’s 10 freakin’ years ago!)? Well I am. That’s right, I said it. I’ve never played through Half-Life — fully at least. Unfortunately, my meek computer at the time (a 486 trying its very best) was barely capable of handling Commander Keen and Chip’s Challenge, let alone Half-Life. By the time the computer in my household had improved, so had first-person shooters. Will anyone argue that Tribes wasn’t the best multiplayer game ever made? I didn’t think so.

That being said, I’m in the precarious position of once again wanting for a capable PC to run Half-Life and unable to achieve that lofty goal. The video above should give you some indication of where my sudden inspiration may have come from: Black Mesa (once titled Black Mesa Source but renamed in compliance with a request from Valve) is a fan-made mod using the Source Engine to recreate the events of the original Half-Life. Graphics are improved considerably given the new engine and, if the trailer’s any indication, the game looks infinitely more cinematic and believable in its new skin. According to Joystiq’s Andrew Yoon, Black Mesa will also come with co-operative play and other multiplayer modes. Yes, we’re pretty freakin’ excited too. So who wants to get me a PC?

VGXPO: An Interview with TN Games Prez Mark Ombrellaro

Do you ever find yourself sitting alone in a dark room, hours spent headshottin’ fools and laughing at them on Steam/Ventrillo, pining for a little more? Are you the type of person that says to themself “I wish I could feel like I just got shot a whole bunch of times!” after hours of online gaming? Well now you can! Actually, in fairness, you could have for some time now. TN Games, makers of the “3rd Space Gaming Vest”, were showing off their wares at the VGXPO this past weekend and we stopped by to check it out and talk to TN Games CEO & President Dr. Mark Ombrellaro.

How does the vest feel? A lot like getting shot by a paintball, though with less sting, to be fair. Honestly, it’s kind of an interesting experience, only hampered by its somewhat cumbersome design (it’s a vest you have to strap into!) and high price-point ($169.99). Check out the interview above for more on the craaazy vest.

Desktop Wallpaper: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Wow. I stumble across a lot of desktop wallpapers while playing around on Digg, and I seldom bother to save any. However this 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea wallpaper by Gedeon Maheux (the guy behind The Iconfactory) is simply outstanding.

Download and enjoy.

CTRL ALT Delete Teacups: For Geeks at Teatime

There are a lot of great places for geeks to grab tea here in Philly. Just as my pal Alexis Siemons, Philly’s leading tea blogger, who dabbles in the subject of steep in Philadelphia. Perhaps one of the many tea shops in town will have these killer CTRL ALT DEL tea cups for sale in the coming months.

Created by MOD Design out in Taiwan, these adorable little cups come complete with circuit board saucers. Wonderful! This is definitely an epic want for us here at the Geek.

Epic Battlestar Galactica PC Mod

Short of spooling up the FTL’s and jumping, or having the firepower to take out an entire Cylon Baseship, I think this tricked out tower can do everything the actual Battlestar Galactica could do on the show.

Behind the BSG logo on the front is a side-loading optical DVD drive, visible even when spinning and beautifully lit from within with some crafty LED’s.  The case also sports a 10″ LCD screen on one side, 3x 2.5″ LCD’s on the front, and an opening on another side that shows off the gorgeous interior like a sideways garage door.

The top is a scaled down version of the landing strip with appropriately lit details (see video after the jump).  I really couldn’t admire the craftsmanship any more than I already have, it’s simply brilliant.  Even if you thought Starbuck was just a place to get coffee (I’m looking at you, Mom) you can understand why this PC case mode is truly epic.

Anyway, I think I’ll just save a year’s worth of paychecks to have one of my own built.  Then I’ll call Athena/Boomer and say “Hey, in case you needed somewhere to park your Raptor…”

The specs and gallery of more images can be found after the jump.

Also included are 2 videos of the DVD drive and sliding bay doors.

Old PCs Made Into Sunset: Gorgeous & Geeky

Old computers. These days, they aren’t good for much, save for making them into a mailbox or something. Artist Sandy Smith… well, she had other ideas.

Behold, Mauritian Sunset. That’s the name of this neat looking art installation at the Embassy Gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland. Placed inside a darkened room, this wall of PCs was designed to create an electronic sunset. The result is a truly beautiful effect.

The back of the installation is a bit scary looking. Screams electrical fire. Take a look at that shot after the jump. Want to see some shots of the sunset? Visit Sandy’s website for more.
