Philadelphia’s Klip Collective at Sundance Film Festival

What's He Building In There?

What's He Building In There?

If you attended last year’s Philadelphia Geek Awards you might have noticed how polished our visuals and animations were. It was a direct result from a close partnership with local studio Klip Collective and we will never stop talking about how awesome those guys are. They deserve all the hype they get, and this time around we’re particularly proud of their involvement at Sundance Film Festival’s New Frontier.

In a world of big Hollywood digital effects and slick animation techniques it’s refreshing to see that use of stop-motion (and a friggin cow tongue) can send shivers down your spine. It’s a good mix of quirky and creepy and yes, it is absolutely a reference to the Tom Waits song. You should check it out, not only because Roger Ebert said so, but because I guarantee you won’t see anything else like it today.

Additional photos of the installation can be seen on Klip Collective’s Blog.

Show Off Your Nerd

Proud Nerds - Soft Goods for Hard Nerds

Proud Nerds - Soft Goods for Hard Nerds

Everyone knows that the geeks and nerds of this city are some of its finest citizens. Our friends at Faculty are no stranger to this and want to show the world how proud they are to be nerdy – proud enough to start their own brand of clothing. Straight from the press release:

Proud Nerds is a brand dedicated to nerds with high standards that believe nothing good in this world would exist without us. When it all burns down the Nerds will rebuild.

Introducing Proud Nerds, soft goods for hard nerds. Inspired by the things we find awesome in our day-to-day nerd dealings, Proud Nerds offers shirts like the popular Nerds Rule The World design or our ode to Warren Robinett, the king of the Easter Egg. Our Space Race triangle design tells the world that you know exactly where HCG 87 is and our Blue Screen of Death Metal shirt shows that gentle side of you that really enjoys listening to Emperor. Among the rest of the collection, you’ll find the Data Miner’s Union, Proud Nerds Insignia, Ruler N, and the very gangster MS-DOS. The shirts are printed on high quality tri-blend american apparel – not that crap that is stiff and shrinks into a belly tee after one wash.

Check out our offerings at proud-nerds.com and level up your life. Order 3 or more tees and use the promo code “NERDUP” to get $10 off your purchase. Be proud of who you are, get real nerdy.

There you have it. Quality gear for those of us that live and die by our TI-83 graphic calculators.

Five Minutes With Michael Uslan, Executive Producer of The Dark Knight Rises

This week, I did a quick interview with Michael Uslan, author of The Boy Who Loved Batman and Executive Producer of The Dark Knight Rises along with every Batman movie since 1989. He’s fresh off a weekend at Comic-Con, where anticipation for The Dark Knight Rises has reached critical mass.

 ———————-

Michael, everyone here at Geekadelphia is foaming at the mouth because we are simply excited about the final installment in the trilogy!  This is the first second time the world is introduced to Bane on the big screen. (The first time was in Batman and Robin)

In the comic books, we know him simply as the unstoppable juggernaut who broke Batman’s back.To those that are familiar with this villain, how well do you feel Tom Hardy did in bringing him to life? How much more hand-to-hand combat are we in for?

Michael Uslan: He IS Bane! The combat sequence is amazing, thanks to the cinematic genius of Christopher Nolan.

Was Tom the ultimate choice from the start? Are you at liberty to say who else might have been considered for the part?
MU: I was ruled out early on… probably because instead of playing sports my whole life, I just read comic books.

Let’s talk a little about one of your panels from Comic-Con, the one titled “Is Batman broken—or is Bruce Wayne crazy for dating Catwoman?”  Here’s what I’m wondering… since Batman is not, in fact, crazy… is it really that bad for a hero of his caliber to be (pardon the pun) a bit batty?

MU: There is NOTHING wrong with Batman! His humanity, anchored by Alfred and Jim Gordon, and his upbringing by his parents, would never allow him to cross the line.

Why Catwoman over Rachel or Vicki Vale? Ask Archie why he leaves Betty in a flash whenever Veronica walks by!

Melissa (my fiancee) told me that you scripted the whole Archie Marries Veronica storyline – what kind of similarities does Archie have with Batman or Bruce Wayne?

MU: See above.

You probably have a ton of movie-premiere related matters to attend to so let’s finish this off with a quick question – Who would win in a real fight: Christian Bale or Tom Hardy?

MU: Their lawyers.

And that’s it – Thank you so much for your time Michael!

 ———————-

I personally can’t wait to go to the movies with my fiancee this weekend.
The Dark Knight Rises is available in theaters July 20. Better grab your IMAX tickets in advance, people!
Edit: I totally forgot that Bane was in Batman and Robin. Shame on me, I even saw that movie in theaters! Thanks for catching that, Erich!

Suit up, Geeks!

Indochino's Superhero Collection

Indochino's Superhero Collection

Let me start by saying this is not a sponsored post. I just happen to have a lot of love for online retailer Indochino‘s custom suits. They’re made according to your exact measurements at a price that makes sense, so naturally I used their services to order my Geek Awards tux.  Yesterday, they announced one of their boldest series of threads yet aptly dubbed the “Superhero Collection.”   (more…)

An Interview with Katrina Law of Spartacus: Vengeance

Katrina Law

Katrina Law

Blood is the price of freedom. This is one of the core principles that drives Spartacus: Vengeance, the sequel to Starz’s explosive Spartacus: Blood and Sand. We recently had a few words with the lovely Katrina Law, whose character is Mira: a slave, a rebel, and a fighter. Here’s what she had to say!

Fiesta Movement: Interview with CBS3′s Nicole Brewer

Tim & Mikey stare at a blank laptop screen. Deep thoughts ensue.

Besides helping ourselves to free coffee this past Monday morning, Mikey and I started our day by arriving at Independents Hall in Old City.  I consider it a ground zero of sorts for a lot of movers and shakers in our closely-knit Philadelphia tech scene, which makes it a great location for the interview that took place!

CBS3′s Nicole Brewer arrived to interview us about our involvement with the Fiesta Movement, specifically how social media has changed the way large corporations market their brands & products.

Joined by Gloria Bell, and later on by Sam DeLaGarza (Brand Manager for the Ford Fiesta) as well as our ridiculously fun Geekadelphia-themed 2011 Fiesta, we wrapped an awesome and informative interview on 3rd street.  Check out the Interview HERE!

PS – if anyone make a ringtone of the “Geekadelphia.. yeaaaaa!” audio at the end of the video clip, we are willing to pay you with fancy things.

Geekadelphia’s Fiesta Movement Mural

Geekadelphia Fiesta Movement Mural

Wow, that went up fast!  Apparently Ninjas came through sometime this past weekend and installed our Fiesta Movement mural onto a wall on 1108 South Street.  We’ve got a handy-dandy video clip (featuring Mikey) explaining the story and concept behind the artwork.

Don’t forget that we’re also throwing an awesome party to celebrate the Mural this Friday, April 2nd @ North Bowl! It’s open to all, just RSVP HERE.

Check in @ the Mural using Foursquare! It’s labeled as “Geekadelphia Fiesta Mural” and we’ll be handing out drink tickets at our party to those that check in. The Mayor of the mural by April 11 might also find themselves winning some pretty cool stuff too, but more details on this will be posted shortly!

There’ll be Free Food, @fatboymonster will be spinning some tunes, Giveaways from our sponsors and friends, and more Free Food!

For more information on our Fiesta Movement, please see the related links below. If you’d like to sign up for more updates on what we’re doing over the next few months, please sign up here.

Rock Band Karaoke @ PYT

Plastic Rock: Rock Band Karaoke @ PYT

If you’re a bonafide Rock Band Legend, you may want to head to @tommyup‘s PYT next Monday, March 8th at 10pm for Plastic Rock.  The event follows the basic karaoke format, so this should be a good time.

Those familiar with this trendy burger joint already know that they have a knack for attracting local geeks to the swanky “hidden” party room in the back like moths to a flame.  It doesn’t have a name, but my friends like to call it “Fangtasia” since the decor resembles that of the vampire club in HBO’s True Blood.

The event will be hosted by local DJ @fatboymonster and the drink specials are  $1 well drinks from 10-11pm.

Rock Band 1 and 2 will be available for play, so dust off that telecaster fire up some Nine Inch Nails (or Alanis Morissette if you’re that guy).

There will be prizes so stay tuned for more details!

Fiesta: Spanish for Party

The Fiesta is also one of Ford’s top selling cars worldwide.  This year, for the first time in North America since 1978-80, the Ford Fiesta (6th generation) will be speeding through our roads to the delight of geeks like us.

Now I mentioned “us” because it involves me directly. As it turns out, yours truly (@bigredtim) was chosen to be an agent for Chapter 2 of the Fiesta Movement along with one of the city’s most animated blog contributers – Michaelangelo Ilagan (@mikeyil).  Together, we’re “Team Geekadelphia” and we’ll be blogging, ustreaming, tweeting, foursquaring, and youtubing our adventures for the next 4 months!

Here’s a rundown of the Fiesta Movement, if you’re not already familiar with it.  Basically Ford is giving us a car for 4 months.  While I do hope that they give us a red one like we asked, we’re just really excited to jump in and drive.  We get to lifestream the experience, enjoy all the sweet onboard gadgets, and enjoy 4 months of Ford paying for our gas expenses (who wouldn’t love that?!)

Now, along with the car, we’re also required to complete missions every month.  These mission could be anything from “depleting a full tank of gas in one long drive” to re-enacting the legendary Leroy Jenkins meme from WoW with 4 of your closest friends.

Mikey and I have a lot of ideas for how we want to spend our 4 months with the car, and a lot of it basically involves us taking advantage of the awesome people we know… turning them into our youtube studio props our cohorts in our quest for Adventure Capitalism.  Here on Geekadelphia you’ll be able to see a full list of our exploits in the form of a weekly rundown, and additionally when something completely amazing occurs.

We asked for a Red one.

Stay tuned on www.fiestamovement.com and right here on geekadelphia.com as we begin filming our first weekend with the Fiesta starting tomorrow as we fly out to Detroit.

One last thing before I forget – we’re definitely having a fiesta to celebrate the arrival of the Fiesta somewhere in Northern Liberties in the coming weeks.  We’ll keep you posted on that too!

God of War 3 Update: Kratos Loves Slurpees

It should come as no surprise that guys like us can’t wait until the highly anticipated release of God of War III on March 16th.

Here’s  the part I’m most excited about:  Collecting cups can yield Slurpee Nation Rewards codes….codes that can be turned in for some exclusive Slurpee-themed GoW3 downloadable content!  Kratos’ Morpheus Armor? Yes, you can has it.  Drink more Slurpees!

Wearable Social Media Venn Diagram

sm_venndiagram

I think it’s pretty clear that social media outlets cater almost exclusively to our obsessive behaviors.  This shirt says it all in a handy dandy diagram in the style that John Venn conceived in 1880.

If you have $19.95 in exact change burning a hole through your pocket, I’d recommend grabbing a copy of this Asphalt colored American Apparel shirt just for fun. (via Neatorama)

First Friday: Ninja Turtles Turn 25

Turtles Van @ Brave New Worlds Philadelphia!

Philadelphia, if you haven’t decided on being in Old City tonight for first Friday, you should definately consider the fact that Brave New Worlds is hosting the mobile Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles van.

“But Tim, I’m going to be at Cavanaugh’s River Deck for the Mashable Mixer sponsored by Independents Hall!”

Oh please, don’t give me that excuse.  I’ll be shmoozin’ with the drink specials there too, but it’s not stopping me from checking out this mobile museum of memorabilia celebrating the 25th anniversary of the first TMNT comic.

The TMNT Van will be across the street from Brave New Worlds tonight from 6-9pm @ 45 N. 2nd Street.  See you there!

PS:  Don’t forget about FREE COMIC BOOK DAY – it’s tomorrow at comic shops everywhere!
