How did you end up doing design?
My life in graphic & web design started by accident. A girl I met at Community College was the person that pushed me to go to the Art Institute. There, I met a person that introduced me to the field of graphic & web design, a field I didn’t know. Honestly, I wanted to study architecture because I’ve always liked it a lot, but I wanted to take a chance at something new and interesting that I did not know.
Who or what inspires you?
The person that inspired me was my brother Johnny. He is a good graffiti artist. As a kid I used sit down and watch him doing his graffiti drawing. He was good doing typography work.
As a person with a disability, what kind of different perspective does this give you?
As a person with a disability I try not to look at myself any different than others. I understand I have a disability and some things may take me a little longer to do, but I love to challenge myself. Many people have questioned how I do design on my computer because they look at my disability. I learned how to manage a standard keyboard and mouse well. I still remember many times when I’ve looked for work and many times I was rejected or discriminated against because those who interviewed me only saw my disability and not my skills. But shit like that has never stopped me. You have to recognize that in this field there are not many people with disabilities designing, for that reason when I meet with other designers they question, “How he does it?” I just do it.
My disability never effected my design or creativity. I just found to do things it different ways. After my accident I thought I would never be able to draw, but I found a way to draw again because I didn’t give up.
Aside from design, what other geeky interests do you have?
My other geeky interest is space and robotic. The technology behind the exploration of other planets and our universe fascinate me. I’d love to be able to travel to space and feel my body in no gravity and feel free from my wheelchair. I probably be the first quadriplegic in Space… hahaha
