When you think of Philadelphia, you think of our community and the wonderful people that are always encouraging each other. One of the shining examples of this is Girl Develop It.
On Friday, September 22, GDI will be celebrating its 6th anniversary with a party that will highlight the outstanding women in tech in Philadelphia. Come out in your best attire to share a toast with GDI to the accomplishments of the female tech community. Food, drinks, swag, and all around good times will be had.
All proceeds raised from the event will go towards programs and scholarships to help women, including women that are underrepresented and women that are unemployed, allowing them to take GDI classes and further their careers. You’ll hear remarks from students, instructors, and volunteers who benefitted from GDI in various ways like scholarship recipients, Montana Goodman and Shyanne Ruiz.
I got a few scholarships last year. I was unemployed and new to tech, so getting to go to GDI classes was a godsend. It open up doors for learning and meeting people in the tech scene, made me feel empowered to keep applying for jobs and looking for a job that would be a good fit. I eventually got a job in Austin, but after 4 months at that job, it was clear that it wasn’t a good fit for me. I reached out to the GDI community again and they helped me find the job I have now at a startup in West Philly. GDI Philly also really helped me understand the culture of the tech community in a friendly atmosphere, which I think is really important.
Girl Develop It’s first-anniversary party was held at the old SEER Interactive office. Five years later, GDI now has over 5,000 members and SEER has moved locations to NoLibs due to the expansion. What began as the occasional HTML/CSS class has now grown into a ton of different technical classes, business and career development classes, study groups, social events, and career panels.
Suzie Nieman, a GDI organizer, has been with the community for about 4 years now and feels “so fortunate” to have met “countless badass women that have taken the initiative to learn new skills” through GDI classes and events.
The success stories are everywhere – women making career moves, starting companies, and creating their own women-focused groups. We have many members that started taking our classes in the first few years and now teach classes of their own, mentor and support women that are new to the community, and are solidly settled into their own amazing tech careers. We’re at the point where you can ask a question on Slack and receive support and encouragement from other community members within hours. The women that are involved with GDI Philly are SO passionate about seeing other women get lifted up and succeed in tech, and it’s truly one of my favorite things about Philadelphia.
To emphasize the importance women hold in a tech world still dominated by men, the theme of this year’s party will be Wonder Woman. Suzie Nieman shared why they decided that Wonder Woman would be the perfect theme for this year’s party.
Wonder Woman is an icon that reminds us of the strength and intelligence of the women that work tirelessly to change the world for the better. Girl Develop It is all about empowering women to learn new skills, build community, and change the world. This year, our Wonder Women theme was chosen to highlight the incredible women that take our classes and attend our events, many of whom probably also have a secret superhero identity…
Want to join these amazing women for one empowering and fun night? Tickets are available at different levels. Please remember any support is a great support. You can purchase a regular ticket for $30, a day-of-the-event ticket for $35 or an individual support ticket for $250.
If you belong to or even own a company that would like to be involved with this year’s celebration and help sponsor the event, with all money going to scholarships, there are various tiers which include sponsorship perks! A company sponsor ticket is $500, a community builder ticket is $1000, and a woman in tech hero ticket is $2500. If you have a venue space that can be used for evening and/or weekend classes in the future, please reach out to GDI. GDI would be happy to have your support and can answer any questions about the party packages and venues at firstname.lastname@example.org.
