I’m not too much a fan of Weird Al, unfortunately, except for his parody of the Michael Jackson classic Beat it. I can’t remember when I first heard it, but it remains one of my nostalgic favorites.
For this week’s column, we highlight Weird Me: The Complete Collection. Weird Me is a complete collection of Kelly Phillips entire comic series that showcases her teenage years “as the moderately successful teenage webmaster of a ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic fansite.”
Phillips completed four volumes of the original comic series, and now I’m looking to gather the entire comic into one book.
When I was 13 years old back in the year 2000, I launched wayuhf.com with the noble goal of running an online petition to solicit MGM Studios for the re-release of the then out-of-print film UHF. I also needed to prove to the sprawling world wide web that I too was one of the most true Weird Al fans. The website ran for many years as my fandom waxed and waned, and catalogued all facets of my astounding passion for all things Al.
Between 2014 and 2015, I completed 4 volumes of Weird Me (over 120 pages of comics), detailing the many trials and triumphs I faced both online and out in the world in pursuit of great weirdness… among them: my discovery of Weird Al and the genesis of my fandom, the results of my UHF petition, so very many concerts and the verbatim reviews from my website, the friends (and stalker) I met on the internet, and my run-ins with Al and his band.
Now, I’m gathering the whole comic series into one collection! With over 60 fixed-up pages and 30 brand new pages of content, this collection features the entire original comic, new untold stories from my years as a webmaster, and shows how this comic has helped me return to my roots, connect with fellow fans, and dare to be stupid!
The Kickstarter has been successfully funded (confetti) but if you still want to support and donate, you definitely are more than welcome to.
By pledging $50 or more, you’ll receive a pre-order copy of Weird Me: The Complete Collection, plus the PDF copy of the book, and other follow-up rewards such as a signed bookplate, sticker sheet, and the enamel pin. You will also be thanked in the book.
Pledge $75 or more and receive the rewards mentioned above, but with one cool addition. Kelly will create a special drawing for you in your copy of the book!
