The Fifth Element still easily stands as one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made. With its hyper stylized future thanks to comic book artist Moebius, the surreal vision of a world that could only be saved by the power of love gave birth not only to the career of Milla Jovovich, but also director Luc Besson who crafted the film as a follow up to his masterpiece Léon: The Professional. The Fifth Element cemented Besson’s status as an auteur to watch out for giving us a film that pushed the very boundaries of practical effects to its absolute limits to pull off its ambitious vision.
For its 20th anniversary the film will soon hit theaters again in a new 4K restoration thanks to Fathom Events Sunday, May 14th, and Wednesday, May 17th, at 2pm and 7pm. The film will be paired with a preview of what promises to be the Besson’s spiritual follow up The Fifth Element, Valerian which focuses on a pair special operatives on a mission to save Alpha, a vast metropolis and home to species from a thousand planets.
