Comedian Chris Fleming is best known for the webseries “GAYLE” in which he portrays an intense suburban housewife character “Gayle Waters-Waters.” (Why Waters-Waters? She explains while powerwalking: “My husband and I had the same last name, but I still insisted on hyphenating it anyway.”) He’s been in Cosmo, Forbes, and The New Yorker, plus he’s appeared on Tosh.0. We got to ask him a few questions before he comes to Philly on Monday, February 13, for a pair of shows at PhilaMOCA.
You’ve got a set of talented collaborators. Where do you find such fun people to work with?
Christian Mingle! No, most of them I went to college with, Melissa Strype and I were in a sketch group together at Skidmore, Brian Heveron-Smith is a musical genius who I know from meetup.com and then the others are adults from my hometown and my mom.
There’s tons of ways to produce video content now and distribute it. What advice do you have for aspiring webseries creators who have some ideas, but aren’t sure of how to start writing and shooting?
I’m not in much of a position to give advice but my experience when we started the web series GAYLE was just working material out in comedy clubs for years and then putting it on camera with the help of my very talented cinematographer Melissa Strype. I’d say surround yourself with very talented people who are better than you in every way.
The Betsy DeVos video you put out in January is deliciously funny and creative. What was putting that together like, artistically and technically? How do you feel about making comedy based on the current political climate?
Thanks, Geekadelphia. Well, at 6 p.m. that day I saw the Betsy DeVos Senate hearing and was floored by how much we look alike so I took out my green screen and purple blazer and shot it at 6:30. So artistically, it was me looking at myself in the mirror and technically it was me focusing the camera on my bichon because I was home alone, and then moving her and sitting in that spot. I knew I wanted to draw what Betsy thought a school bus was so I took a bigass sharpie and just free-drew that messed up bird-plane. Then I edited it until 2 a.m. and put it out at 6 a.m.
Because the site is Geekadelphia, I’m always curious as to what people geek out about, whether it’s the Final Fantasy series or the latest season of The Bachelor. What are you watching on TV/streaming sites? Are you reading anything you’re really into?
I’m pretty behind on the ol’ streaming TV, usually I just rewatch the last episode of Breaking Bad for some reason. I love seeing Walt in New Hampshire. I’m reading The Shining right now and absolutely beside myself about it. It’s hard though, ’cause I’m trying to get Shelly Duvall out of my head while reading it, but I just can’t.
What can attendees of your Philly shows expect?
A spicy new pair of blue boots that I’m feeling good about.
