When we last left the plucky protagonists behind The Plot Thickens a year ago, they had begun working on writing down the rules and finalizing the first two planned expansions. Fast forward to today and The Plot Thickens is one of five finalists in Hasbro Gaming Lab’s Spring 2016 Challenge.
“My mom actually told me about it,” said Brigette Indelicato, “she saw it on the Today Show and was like, ‘you should enter’, so we just did it on a whim and they selected 15 semi-finalists out of 650. Then we were one of the five finalists. Each of the five finalists has to do a crowdfunding campaign. We each got $2000 to work towards either polishing our game or to prepare for the Indigogo campaign.”
The crowdfunding for The Plot Thickens has been going well. In order for the five finalists to be considered for the top prize, they have to collect 100 individual backers. It is a point of pride among the game’s developers that theirs was the first of the five finalists to break that threshold. Just because they reached that arbitrary number set by the contest, doesn’t mean they can’t use all the help they can get. The Indiegogo campaign wraps up on November 11 so check it out and grab a first edition!
“One thing that is cool,” said Mike Callahan, “is if we do win, we get $25,000 and we get flown out to Hasbro’s headquarters to talk about a deal to get this on every store shelf in America. I was just in Target the other day and I saw last year’s winner on the shelf and I was just like, ‘Oh my god, that could be us!'”
“[Hasbro] leaves it kind of open too.” Said Tom Rochelle, “There is a potential of being published by them. So if after the contest is all done and another publisher comes up to us and says, ‘hey, we want this deal,’ we can go with them but Hasbro has first right of refusal. It is kind of a neat thing for them to do, to leave that open.”
Running a crowdfunding campaign can be a job in and of itself so Brigette, Mike, and Tom, have been dividing and conquering. They have been demonstrating the game at Atomic City Comics, Tattooed Mom’s, South Jersey Geek Fest. You can try the game for yourself tonight at the Franklin Institute’s Halloween edition of Science After Hours. In November they will be showing off their latest planned expansions at Metatopia in Morristown NJ, November 3-6.
