The Philly Sketchfest, produced annually since 2008, turns the city into an international destination for sketch comedians. With events at multiple venues across town this year, scripted comedy fans have a lot of options to watch, learn, and hang out with these funny writers and performers. The festival runs from Thursday, March 31st through Sunday, April 3rd.
Acts we’ve featured previously in Geekadelphia posts include Baby Steps fresh from the Bechdel Test Fest, ManiPedi, House of Solitude, and The Mean Wendy Band. A musical duo called Success 5000 is coming from Edmonton, Alberta to Philly Sketchfest! (For those unaware, Edmonton is quite far away.) One member of the Sketchfest planning group, comedian Nicole Yates, said “Every group that was picked are playing at the top of their game and it’s going to be an amazing four days of sketch comedy that I hope everyone can see at least some of!”
Sketchfest organizers this year have included a film showcase, with sketch videos from local and national sketch performers. This is one of several multi-act revues within the run of shows, giving audience an even greater ROI on their Sketchfest dollars in terms of number of acts seen in one event. And those who want to up their sketch game as artists can take workshops, like “Solo Characters” with Amanda Xeller, a New York-based performer who coheads the Lady Sketch Lab at Magnet Theater.
