Are you a nurse or a nursing student in Philadelphia? Do you have an idea that could improve the health of our fellow citizens? If so the Philadelphia Social Innovation Lab wants to hear from you! The Philadelphia Social Innovation Lab is looking for nurses in the Philadelphia area who are, per their website, “committed to promoting and nurturing innovation for social impact.”
The Social Innovation Lab, founded by Nicholas Torre and Tine Hanson-Turton in 2012, is as an “offshoot to the Philadelphia Social Innovation Journal” according to Torre. Social Innovation is ‘a simple solution to a social problem or issue that is efficient, effective, affordable, sustainable, and accessible to the consumer and thereby creates value not only to the consumer but society as a whole.
The Social Innovation Lab understands that nursing will play a crucial role in addressing and creating these simple solutions to key healthcare gaps in our City. The goal of the Social Innovation Lab is not to teach people what to think, says Torre, “but it teaches people how to think.” In healthcare today nursing plays an integral role in creating and implementing disruptive solutions to improve health. “When you look at the healthcare workforce, a lot of the new modeling has come out of nursing….the hope is that these nursing innovators will go back to their institution and be a catalyst for change.”
The Spring 2016 cohort, which will run from March to early June, and will accept ten individual participants and/or teams. According to Torre, the Lab is a place where “leaders or younger individuals who want to have a chance to play with their ideas and potentially get a foothold in the Philadelphia regional market [can] test out their ideas and actually see if they are viable.” Stated Torre, “when you give people the tools and a way to think differently and allow people to pursue their dreams — we’ve seen incredible things happen.”
The deadline to submit a nursing and community health innovation idea is January 21st. The short application form can be completed online here.
