Philadelphia is home to amazing people; creators, scientists, thinkers. When it comes to the women, well the women are fearless. Fearless in their pursuit of achieving their goals. Trailblazers in their fields. That’s why the Hive is inviting women to the first conference celebrating those who are writing the future of Philadelphia. Fearless Philly Conference will be taking place on November 21 in Old City. It’ll be a day packed full of amazing panels that are meant to inspire, connect with new minds, and help you find your voice in a busy online world.
The brain behind this conference is also the genius behind, The Hive, Philadelphia’s first co-working space dedicated to ambitious women, and Femme and Fortune. Melissa Alam spoke to us about the conference and what it means to her and the women of Philadelphia.
First off, I’m just curious why you decided to start the Fearless Philly Conference?
I’m a huge believer in constantly learning and investing in yourself and your business. That’s how I’ve been able to grow and be in the position I’m in now. I’ve been freelancing on my own for the past 3 1/2 years, and I’ve invested in multiple conferences and workshops around the country in the hopes of feeling inspired, growing my network and creating genuine relationships with fellow creatives. The Fearless Philly Conference is now my chance to give back to the local community and provide a day of learning, networking and overall motivation for women in the city. It’s the perfect next step for The Hive to offer conferences, and hopefully we can move this platform to different cities next year.
How was the process in getting everyone involved in this? You have quite the list of speakers.
Now that is a perfect example of how I’ve been investing in relationships throughout my career. The speakers are all either men or women who I can call my friends and fellow entrepreneurial leaders or people introduced to me via other relationships and acquaintances I’ve made. For example, Lizzy Okoro who will be speaking on our personal branding panel during Fearless is a friend I made at a female entrepreneur conference in Los Angeles a year ago. We’ve stayed in touch through email and the wonderful world of social media, and now she’ll be flying in from LA to drop some knowledge bombs about the growth of her beautiful print magazine Bunch Magazine.
I’m also super excited about both of our keynotes, Miki Agrawal of Thinx and Naama Bloom of HelloFlo.com. They’re two women that are really spearheading change and innovation when it comes to female puberty and menstruation – taboo topics that are finally seeing some conversational and innovative breakthroughs these days.
What are you hoping comes out of this conference?
Being my first conference, I know that it’ll be one big learning experience for myself and my team. I’m hoping that this conference allows women to step outside of their comfort zones and really invest in their futures and careers. I also hope that this conference allows both attendees and speakers to create new collaborations, friendships and connections so that they can see the positive outcome of this event and continue supporting initiatives like The Hive.
Any words to share to women that might be on the fence about attending this conference?
Jump over that fence! This conference came about because we wanted to create a one-day experience that will inspire women to become more fearless in their everyday thought and action. A city full of women like that is a city on the rise in my mind.
We aimed to make the conference affordable and allow attendees to receive a quality experience full of education and learning. I like organizing fun events that are casual, allowing guests to feel comfortable to be themselves, and Fearless will be a big reflection of that style. We’re really looking forward to having all of the amazing speakers in one room and can’t wait for November 21st to come!
