Imagine walking home from a night out with friends and it comes to the point where you’ve separated from the rest of the group. It should be okay. You shouldn’t have to worry. It’s only a few blocks, but you’re nervous anyway because you never know who you’ll encounter. And it shouldn’t be that way.
Thankfully, ROAR for Good has created something that will make women have confidence that they will be safe when they are traveling alone.
The product came about when co-founder and CEO, Yasmine Mustafa, learned of the rape of a woman in her Philadelphia neighborhood. This came shortly after from her trip to South America where she encountered many women who suffered abuse on a daily base.
She originally thought about creating a macelet but women were afraid of an attacker being able to use mace against them. So she did some thinking and created, Athena.
Athena is fashionable jewelry that the wearer can quickly press and it will emit a loud alarm scaring off any attackers, message your designated loved ones of your location, and alert the authorities that you are in need of help through the mobile app. The app also allows anyone whom you give permission to the ability to track where you are, so they know that you made it home safely.
It’s amazing how this small device can hold so much power and save countless women from sexual assault.
