This First Friday the arts, technology, and gaming fuse together in Cipher Prime’s showing “We’ve Traveled So Far…” presented at Indy Hall. Indy Hall and Cipher Prime were two of the first movers in the Philly co-working and gaming industries, respectively. This is Cipher Prime’s first foray into the world of physical art, and though Indy Hall generally only shows member’s work, they’ve made an exception this time.
Cipher Prime’s games are lean, beautiful, and use elements like music and light to create captivating experiences. Their first game, Auditorium, was the beginning of co-founders Will Stallwood and Dain Saint’s journey as a game studio. With Auditorium Duet, the multiplayer sequel in production 7 years and 6 games after the original, they created “We’ve Traveled So Far…” as a reflection on the journey they’ve taken, and to inspire others to think about their own.
However, they went about the artistic process a tad differently. “We wanted to create a system for the art to form itself, and then let it tell us what it is,” says Stallwood. Each system simulates the feeling of real world places, and will later be seen in the gameplay of Auditorium Duet. Snapshots of these living light beam systems will be hung on canvas, but there’s more to the light beam magic. “Selfie booths” like only Cipher Prime can deliver will be there for visitors to play and create with. They’ve repurposed Leap Motion, originally meant to track hands in space for virtual reality, to map faces to beams of light/make selfies even more addictive. A professional photo printer lets you take the best of the snaps home.
