The showcase last Thursday brought 12 Philly area start-ups together to battle it out for two spots at the national Tech Cocktail competition in Las Vegas this October. After an informal expo exploration, each startup had one minute to pitch.
What I was sold on: Philly’s got some diverse and potentially game changing start-ups to show off…and Tech Week hadn’t even officially kicked off yet! Companies varied from a social networking app for alumni, to a waterless and on-demand car washing service.
The live vote was intense, with whispers of “who are you going for???” echoing throughout the room. I’ll admit I voted for future car washing giants Waterless Works (fingers crossed), in the hopes that with their help my car would be presentable one day. However, the equally brilliant Bestimators took the live vote win. They simplify the home improvement shopping process by handling the contractor screening for you, and then presenting quotes in an easily comparable format. Tech.Co readers weighed in earlier that day choosing ROAR for Good, a company creating wearable self-defense technology that actually works.
Bestimators and ROAR for Good will represent the Philly presence in Las Vegas, but the rest of these startups have a great shot of joining the list of Philly grown success stories as well. Choosito! helps kids search the internet for information at their reading level. Can-Scope created a platform to bridge the information disconnect between cancer patients and their doctors. RTP Holdings has indoor GPS that will end frustrating searches for store employees because you can’t find “insert embarrassing purchase here.”
In short, Philly has got startups rearin’ to go in every field. Check out the full list of showcase participants below, and don’t be surprised if you start hearing their names around:
