At a recent Drink Philly event, as Founder Adam Schmidt raised his glass to toast, a can of ginger ale crashed from his jacket and rolled across the floor. After a few moments of confused silence, Schmidt stammered, “I’m sorry…but it’s ginger ale. It’s been ginger ale…since… I don’t know how long.”
Since the shocking revelation, and his subsequent fleeing from the scene, neither Schmidt nor Drink Philly have commented. However, after sending several dozen specialty ginger ale six-packs to both home and office addresses, he’s agreed to meet and answer questions.
How did this all begin?
Schmidt: It’s hard to say. One day I thought was reaching for a Kolsch, but I got my friend’s glass instead. He had been ginge-ing the whole time I knew him.
Schmidt: That’s what they call it. It’s not really a known thing, but there are a ton of down low ginger ale drinkers out there.
Schmidt: Yea, I’m actually glad that this is finally out. I want to bring awareness to this important issue. It’s so easy to take throwing back a few beers for granted. I can’t tell you how much I wish I could go back to when I had control over my life, and was drinking beer. I look back now and realize how much I’ve changed for my ginge-ing habit.
In what ways?
Schmidt: Well, there’s all the food coloring purchases, and intercepting the packages. The hardest thing is smuggling in the ginger ale. I’ve been wearing a lot of layers/blazers, so I’m really happy this came out before summer. Last year I had to get really creative with the ginger ale placement…
What steps are you taking to get help?
Schmidt: All these bars I’ve been in the bathrooms of, darkening my ginger ale during stout season, can be my biggest allies in recovery. I know my friends will be there to hold me accountable, as well as the incredible bartenders in Philly. I can only imagine what others suffering from this are going through without the networks of Drink Philly to keep them on track. I’ve already reached out to Canada Dry to collaborate on an awareness campaign, and I plan to have an informational page, as well as support group available through our website.
Thank you so much for sharing Adam. I also wanted to apologize for sending so much ginger ale to you. I didn’t realize the nature of the situation.
Schmidt: You couldn’t have known. But thank you. Even though I agreed to this interview because I just wanted the deliveries to stop, I’m glad I was able to speak out.
