Have you ever wanted to make a mummy? Do you want to learn how to write hieroglyphics? Do you just want to learn more about Ancient Egypt? The Penn Museum has you covered!
On Saturday, March 21, the Penn Museum hosts Egyptomania!, an all-ages event offered free with Museum admission.
Several events are repeated throughout the day, allowing visitors multiple opportunities to learn about the modern museum’s interaction with the culture of Ancient Egypt. Witness conservators work to preserve mummies in the Artifact Lab, or go on a guided tour with a focus on the animals ancient Egyptians loved and even mummified.
The Mummy Makers workshop focuses on how mummies were made, from brain removal to the ceremony of weighing the heart. Ellen Owens, Director of Learning Programs, tells us the workshop “puts everyone in the workshop in the role ancient Egyptian embalmer or priest.” Owens calls the workshop’s inclusion “an exciting opportunity to unveil our most popular K-12 workshop to a general audience.”
Penn’s curatorial staff lectures discuss recent discoveries and how Egyptian culture is reflected in today’s trends, as well as a Q&A about the museum and its artifacts. Audience participation game What in the World? asks participants to identify various Egyptian artifacts.
For music lovers, percussionist Joe Tayoun will host an instructional drum circle. Drums are limited, but guests may bring their own. Dance scholar Habiba will perform traditional Egyptian dances.
All day, two craft stations are offered: canopic jars (where a mummy’s organs were placed) and wesekh necklaces (unisex collar-like necklaces). The Pepper Mill Cafe will add an Egyptian flair to its menu, with dishes as varied as Cilantro Couscous Salad, and Harissa Roasted Chicken with Cucumber Lemon Yogurt, among others.
