It’s tough to get ahold of a decent pachinko machine in Philly these days, but did you know that along with Chicago we used to me a major hub for East Coast distribution of the things? But, I digress. This week’s featured Kickstarter is Hard Rain, a crazy pachinko physics / puzzle hybrid from local developer Fuguelike. Read more about the game below.
The hard rain is falling. Your objective: to prevent the drops from overflowing the drain. Devise a strategy to manipulate the flow, then construct a defense by combining elements of the three types of components – FIELD, SOLID, and FORCE. As the waves of rain intensify in strength so must your defense.
Hard Rain has it’s own unique style of gameplay. While it doesn’t conform strictly to the conventions of any genre, it operates most like a physics puzzler in Classic Mode, where each quick level introduces new elements of the game through unique challenges. Longer levels in Classic Mode, and especially the Arcade Mode, take on more of a tower defense style of gameplay – i.e. developing a strategic defense and evolving it as levels increase. Arcade mode is endless, and is based on achieving a high score, which will be connected to online leaderboards.
The retro-analogue aesthetic of the game is inspired by media made with analogue electronics of past decades, like slit-scan film effects, analogue synths, early computer vector drawing, and cathode-ray-tube screens. The sound effects are custom crafted with FM synthesis in the vein of early arcade cabinet sounds and the whole presentation is bathed in the soft glow of a well worn CRT.
Still can’t quite picture it? There’s a free alpha build available for yout to check out before you drop your hard-earned coin in this machine. Deceptively simple and devilishly deep, Hard Rain is a treat for fans of focused, frenetic puzzlers. If you’re already a fan of titles like Cipher Prime’s Intake, Hard Rain may be the game for you. The project is in it’s final week of funding. so get out there and help ’em out, geeks!
