This weekend, Geekadelphia headed out to Manayunk for some food and sunshine. The second annual “StrEAT Food Festival kicked off Saturday morning, as part of Manayunk Restaurant Week which lasts through April 26. Organized by the Manayunk Development Corporation, the festival is a celebration of local culinary talent and a showcase of food trucks from across Philadelphia.
More than 30 food trucks set up along Main Street, with appearances by favorites like Little Baby’s Ice Cream, Lil Dan’s, and many more. Each year’s festival highlights one local ingredient and encourages vendors to create specials around it; this year, the strawberry got its moment, showing up everywhere from simple desserts to sake shooters and pulled pork sandwiches.
We enjoyed a sampling of fresh carnitas tacos from Los Taquitos dePuebla, indulgent pulled pork grilled cheese and strawberry shortcake from Vernalicious and intensely dark chocolate gelato from Capogiro. The most sought after trucks were unquestionably The Cow & The Curd and Nomad Pizza, which stayed swamped all day long.
While we loved walking around town (and giving our calves a workout on those hills!), it was pretty difficult to get around. With so many people and vendors packed into just a little more than half a mile, it just doesn’t make sense not to close off the street to traffic. As lines for some of the more popular trucks snaked along the sidewalk, we felt serious compassion for anyone with a dog or baby stroller trying to get by. Something to consider for next year!
