When you hear about a graphic novel that involves H.P. Lovecraft and his skull being stolen from his Rhode Island grave, you go in with certain expectations. You anticipate a horror story with lots of Cthulhu elements and monsters that would make you lose sleep for a week.
What I was not expecting was a slice of life story about a Lovecraft obsessed artist and his junkie friends on a quest to find the skull and the comedy of errors that result. Or lines like “Why does everything have to be about skull$#@!ing with you people?”
Golgotha was nothing I anticipated and everything I wanted, but didn’t know it. The story of Aleister and his junkie friends looking to recover the stolen skull of H.P. Lovecraft is filled with so much heart and humor that you come away with a warm feeling in your gut that you just don’t see coming.
Andrew Harrison has created possibly one of the most memorable casts of characters I have ever had the pleasure to meet. From the hero Aleister to Judd, his best friend who doesn’t want him to leave Providence, to Crazy Henry, part shaman, part Woodstock throw back, to the Grim Brothers (Shawgrim and Grimshaw) to Brazilian Vampires, ex-girlfriends and Dominican drug dealers, each of them adding something to the story that, if it was missing, would have made it that much less complete.
The artwork by Karl Slominski is the ideal compliment to Harrison’s script. His style perfectly portrays the manic, frenzied pace of a story that moves at a breakneck pace to begin with. Plus he conveys the humor of the script with such skill you will find yourself laughing out loud in more than one place from the art alone. But at the same time, he can also draw scenes full of disquiet and eeriness that they will make your hair stand on end.
Golgotha is a book that will come out of left field and tug at your heartstrings while also making you feel just the smallest bit uneasy. 215 Ink continues to impress me with the books they are publishing and Golgotha is another fine example of what I mean.
