A Simple Life on Blu-Ray [Impressions]

A Simple Life or 桃姐 (Tao Jie) hit DVD and Blu-ray this Tuesday from Well Go USA and is the newest Chinese Language film by Ann Hui. The film is based on the on the true-life story of Roger Lee the writer and producer of the film, who once worked as a film producer for Golden Harvest.

The film is the story of Ah Tao (Deanie Ip) who has worked for a wealthy family as a maid for 60 years and four generations. When she suffers a stroke and losses control of the right side of her body, she is taken care of by Roger(Andy Lau) one of the children she helped raise, who has become a successful film producer.

A Simple Life is a touching portrait of the relationship between Roger and the woman who raised him. After her stroke Ah Tao is placed in a nursing home and Roger is now the one taking care of her. As the film progresses we find Ah Tao was more than just a maid to Roger’s family, as his family and friends all come out to show their respect, support and love for her in her remaining years.

A Simple Life is not only an amazing slice of life drama, but a who’s who of Chinese cinema as well, with appearances by Sammo Hung, Tsui Hark, Stanley Kwan, Raymond Chow and one of my favorite Category 3 stars Anthony Wong. So if you’re a fan of Chinese Dramas, I can’t help but suggest you pick this great film up. It’s a heart-warming portrait, which gives an interesting look into growing old in Hong Kong.
