Adventure Time: The Triumphant Return of Fionna and Cake [Review]

Cartoon Network was nice enough to send me not only their newest Adventure Time DVD compilation featuring the episode Fionna and Cake, which hit store shelves yesterday. But they also sent along a DVD screener of Bad Little Boy the newest Adventure Time episode that finally brought back Fionna and Cake, which premiered Monday night.

The episode Bad Little Boy brings back our favorite gender swapped adventure team for more girl power, as the Ice King starts to share some more of his creepy fan-fiction to a group of captured princesses. That is until the vampire Marceline frees the princesses and takes over the story, centering it instead on the Vampire Heart-throb Marshall Lee and Fionna’s complicated feelings for the bad boy.

While the episode features more great songs much like the original Fionna and Cake episode I felt it swapped between the real world and fan-fiction world a bit too much and that made the episode seem a bit unfocused, but still enjoyable.  Of special note, Neil Patrick Harris reprises his role as Prince Gumball in this episode and Donald Glover from Community voices Marshall Lee.

As for the DVD Compilation, Fionna and Cake you get not only the namesake episode finally available on DVD, but some other great episodes as well. This DVD has some of my personal favorite episodes including Card Wars, Death In Bloom and Princess Cookie. While I do enjoy these compilation discs, I really wish they would do some more season collections.

Needless to say if you’re a fan of Adventure Time and Fionna and Cake I highly suggest checking out Bad Little Boy and picking up the DVD Compilation today, I have a feeling this will not be the last time we will be seeing those two.
