Indy Hall Arts to Host Music Inspiring Arts Exhibit for First Friday

I’m sitting here listening to “My Pet Snakes” by Jenny and Johnny and the only reason I mention that is to prove a hugely obvious point: people like to work to music. Me? I like to write to emotionally charged surf rock and Thelonious Monk. It keeps my fingers from idling. You? For all I know, you might prefer to code to Bach, paint to Lupe Fiasco or design to Bjork (wouldn’t that be something).
But that’s the premise of this week’s First Friday exhibit at Indy Hall called Music Inspiring Art (MIA). This group show is a community-driven exhibit loosely curated by Mike Jackson, Sean Martorana and Kara LaFleur.
The idea for the show was inspired by Jackson’s work ethic and the constant stream of music that he is surrounded by.
“I have four brothers so my house was always really loud, and I can’t sit in silence. So, I ended up listening to a lot of loud music. I can’t live without music and I found that whatever I’m listening to dictates how I work,” says Jackson.
With such a capricious theme, the show will be an exciting experiment in creativity for both artists and attendees alike. Martorana and Jackson have already started collaborating with nearly 25 artists, sweeping across mediums and music genres.
“We have so much artwork. And we’re trying to build up the art community in Philadelphia–beyond Indy Hall. The fact that all of these artists came, with so much energy and excitement, to do a show together… That’s exciting to me,” says Martorana.
Show-goers can expect to see a broad range of photography, fashion, painting and illustration–all influenced by the likes of Daft Punk to The Kills, Frank Ocean to Lykke Li. Martorana and Jackson will also be collaborating on a piece inspired by Jack White.
“It’s about giving other artists who might not know how to get their name out there, the opportunity to do so. Just starting and launching their art career. That’s what Indy Hall is all about. That’s what we’re all about,” says Martorana.
The Opening Reception will at 6:00p.m. on the first floor at IndyHall so brave the cold you artsy audiophile!
