This week we talked with Allison Stadd, editor of the Philly tourism blog Uwishunu.
Allison has her hands full with reporting on everything that happens in our fair city, but also finds time to also work as a contributing writer for Media Bistro’s AllTwitter.com. We chatted with Allison about Uwishunu, tech and more so read on!
How did you get involved with Uwishunu?
My first foray into Uwishunu was as a freelance blogger under the venerable Eric Smith starting in December 2008. Once Eric moved on from the editor position, I decided to throw my hat in the ring and was incredibly excited to become editor in November 2010. It’s been very cool to witness the transformation of the site over four years, and even cooler to be a part of that transformation.
Uwishunu covers a lot of goings-on in Philly. How do you keep up with all the awesome things we have going on in our city?
Most people know the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (also known as Visit Philly), of which Uwishunu is a product, as the creative minds behind the With Love, Philadelphia XOXO campaign. As innovative and iconic as With Love has become, it only scratches the surface of what GPTMC’s staff does and can do.
Keeping up with everything happening in Philly is facilitated by working alongside 40-some other intelligent, clued in, passionate Philadelphians. Taking hourly stock of Facebook and Twitter doesn’t hurt, either. I also spend 100% of my free time exploring the city and poking my head into shops, restaurants, bars and museums. No better way to learn than by hitting the streets!
What do you geek out to?
I definitely geek out to Apple products (I can waste an entire afternoon in the Apple store) and I read an unholy amount of blogs. Also… I have a crush on Google. I don’t think I could last a week without Google apps.
Apple makes awesome things. What do you think of the new iPad mini?
I love all things mini — and the iPad mini is no exception. Just like the release of the first iPod nano was an exciting update to the traditional iPod (I may or may not have 3 iPods), the iPad mini is super appealing. That said, for desktop work, the larger the screen size the better.
And what about your favorite Google App?
Hands down, Google Drive. I keep everything on there, from random lists of ideas to detailed spreadsheets to anally catalogued recipes. It’s a great way to stay organized both professionally and personally, and you can access it on any computer and even your phone. I used to have labeled and categorized binders coming out my ears, and this is the perfect 2012 equivalent.
What are some of your favorite places in Philly?
This question is always a toughie — my favorite Philly things can shift by the day! There’s so much fabulousness here, it’s hard to pick. But here’s my top 5 right now:
Favorite brunch: Green Eggs Café
Favorite live music venue: always and forever Johnny Brenda’s
Favorite happy hour: South Philly Taproom
Favorite theater: Arden Theatre Company
Favorite source for gifts: Duross & Langel
All great choices! Thanks so much for speaking with us Allison!
