Mike Tyson is bringing his one-man show MIKE TYSON: UNDISPUTED TRUTH to Philadelphia’s Academy of Music on Thursday, May 2, 2013. Tickets are on sale now.
Tyson’s history with Philadelphia is unfortunately very brief. He’s been in one fight in Philadelphia, and that was a 1995 lopsided victory against Buster Mathis Jr. right after his release from prison.
What is undisputed about Tyson is how polarizing he is. His roller-coaster life has had the extremes of ups and downs. Growing up in the Bronx, his father abandoned him and his mother died when he was 16. Turning to boxing, he had a meteoric rise to become a world-renowned Heavyweight Champion. His decent happened just as quickly sparked by his rape conviction and six-year prison sentence, and since then he has been an enigma.
Once thought of as the most-feared fighters of all time, his image in pop culture as of late has painted him as more human, more vulnerable, and more open. Tyson opens up about his life in his show. Nothing is off-limits: The fights, the rape, the ear-biting, the Hangover, his bi-polar disorder, and the sudden death of his 4-year-old daughter.
If nothing else, the show will be a fascinating took into the life of a man who has been through the gamut.
Given all of that, geeks will know Mike Tyson best from the 1987 NES game “Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!” Will he talk about it in his one-man show? We can only hope.
Nintendo based the NES game on its “Punch-Out!!” arcade game, but contracted with Mike Tyson to put his likeness in the game and make him the final boss. After slogging through the likes of Glass Joe and Soda Popinksi, you had one chance to beat Tyson. Lose, and it was an instant game over.
One punch from 8-Bit Tyson would put you on the mat, just like real-life Tyson.
Thank goodness there were passcodes in the game, or else many a Nintendo would have been thrown out the window in frustration.
However, after the bevy of legal trouble Tyson got himself into, Tyson was removed from future versions of the game and replaced by “Mr. Dream”.
Also, just for kicks, here’s footage of Mike Tyson making appearances in the WWF knocking out professional wrestlers dubbed over with “Punch-Out!!” sounds. Thanks, Internet!
