Weekly Kickstarter: Rusty the Rainbow Whale from Broken Compass Studios
This is it! The final Geekadelphia featured Kickstarter of the year. And the honor goes to… a Kickstarter out of NYC? Wait, wait, wait. Before you do something crazy. This isn’t any old project, it’s an iOS game featuring art from Philadelphia’s very own Yis “NoseGo” Goodwin, who you may recall took home the Visual Artist of the Year at this year’s Philly Geek Awards. This is Rusty the Rainbow Whale.
Rusty the Robot Whale … is a discarded, banged-up old robot with a heart of gold. Besides cheffing up some fine cuisine, over his lifetime he’s cultivated one epic aspiration: to make every last person on the entire planet smile at exactly the same moment.
Floating along in the southern tropics during an especially blustery and rainy storm, Rusty ducked under a rocky outcropping to chomp down on one of his favorite island burgers and ponder how he might achieve his goal. After many sumptuous sandwiches, and accidentally falling asleep for a snooze once or twice, he emerged from his cave to see a majestic glow: an enormous, resplendent rainbow racing across the sky from one horizon to the other.
He had found his answer. Using the secret power of eating he learned from the Catball, combined with a bit of engineering ingenuity, he’ll create a rainbow large enough to encircle the entire world.
Rusty is a side-scrolling distance game where you will be sailing the high seas and ascending into space, all while munching colorful treats to grow your rainbow. Integrating light puzzle elements with quick reaction times, you’ll be hard pressed to evade dastardly Shark Mines and free-ranging Rubber Duckies. Luckily, Rusty summons up a little storm cloud buddy from his steam spout that strikes baddies down with lightning.
Succeeding means coordinating Rusty’s eating, shooting lightning, and managing Rusty’s color analyzer, which determines which colors of food he can eat to create rainbow stripes. Snag the right foods at the right places and times to grow your rainbow and progress. Truly effective play will require a few fingers on the screen and some quick, coordinated movement.
This is NoseGo’s second round helping out the gang of artists over at Broken Compass Studios, who first burst onto the iOS scene with Catball Eats it All, which they successfully Kickstarted back in the Summer of 2012. It’s a great looking project from a stellar team, and you can get some really nice NoseGo art out of the deal. Perfect way to end the year, eh?
