The Expendables 2 Blu-ray [Impressions]

When it comes to The Expendables films, I’m a bit biased as a child of the 80s. I grew up with these larger than life titans, watching their adventures on VHS whenever my parents would suffer a lapse of judgment at the video rental counter. I loved every rocket-launching, skull crushing minute of it.

Lionsgate was nice enough to send me a Blu-ray of The Expendables 2 and the film is a rare example of the sequel outshining the original. The film is hitting DVD and Blu-ray this Tuesday November, 20th just in time for Thanksgiving and this time around they added two more action 80s icons to the Expendables roster; Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

This time The Expendables are on a mission that should be an easy paycheck, but when one of their men is murdered on the job, their quest for revenge puts them deep in enemy territory and up against an unexpected threat.

The Blu-ray looks and sounds amazing. I love watching heavy action films like this, because I really get to experience my system and give it a good workout. Oh DTS-HD how I love thee. The disc itself is also packed with extras as well, so if you have already seen the film there is enough of a reason to still pick it up. There are of course the standard deleted scenes, director’s commentary and gag reel, but where the disc shines is in the docs included.

Big Guns, Bigger Heroes is a great 30 minute documentary included on the disc that breaks down the 80s action star and how it came to be. Since this was made in conjunction with The Expendables 2 it features all the majors players of the era and really gives some great insight into the evolution of the action film in the 80s. There is also another doc called Guns For Hire that is a really interesting look into the real world of mercenaries.

If you missed this in the theater I really suggest you pick this disc up. Not only is the film good enough that it stands up on repeated views, but the special features on this disc are a real treat for fans of the genre.

I figured that this movie would have much less of a plot than the first movie. I like action movies and even if they are all explosions I really do enjoy it. My husband loved the first one and while we weren’t able to see The Expendables 2 in theaters I know he wants to see it. So I added it to my Blockbuster @ Home movie queue which is available from DISH. The movie should be here via mail in the next few days. My DISH co-worker says that the movie is very nostalgic as it has most of the action heroes we grew up with it in the film. I think that’s plenty of reason for me to rent this movie. Their acting wasn’t great in the 80’s and it’s not that great now but these are the founders of the action flick. That’s plenty of motive to rent this one. Did I mention that Chuck Norris is just another awesome reason to rent this film?
